I posted this to Facebook.
For the past 4 years, first with Bex in Kinetic Monkey and now doing my solo stuff, there have been times when a kind of complete body of work emerges from demos and mixes and projects and assembles itself in my mind ready for release. This is one of those times.
In a way, this is the easiest time for me as a musician. I can listen back to a number of cohesive tracks, happy with what I’m hearing, chuffed as chips that I can still do this and that I still enjoy it.
But then comes the hard part: making decisions about how to release it. Some releases have been effortless and easy. Some I’ve just dropped and have been relatively successful. For some I’ve done press releases and teaser trailers and interviews and they’ve flopped.
If you’ve been reading my blog posts recently, you’ll know I’ve been trying to work out the formula for a successful release, but in a way that doesn’t matter. Even if nobody ever listened, I’d still make music. So for this next release I’m not going to measure it’s success in numbers or reviews, but in how alive it makes me feel.
And there’s one thing that makes me feel more alive than anything else: Community. The bulk of this next EP has been recorded with me sitting with a sampler and a laptop, headphones on, alone, and there’s something missing. That something is you. I’ve loved every moment of making music with the help of others; the countless studio hours with Bex, remixing for Alywin, recording with Steve, uni bands with Ben and Matt, producing for Abbie, recording Josh’s drums, playing gigs promoted by Rhys and James, touring with Alberto Aitor and Fran, tracking bass at Studio5, working on tracks for the Monome community, having Andy help with mastering, having Ben help with keys, having Maria and Alun produce artwork for releases, any time I’ve EVER been in a room with another musician making art.
Crazy times. Beautiful times.
I’m asking for your involvement, but I’ve no idea how other musicians and artists can help bring to life an EP that has already been recorded but I’d love your help in any way you can think. Art, images, videos, remixes, promo ideas, anything you can offer.
Also I’m totally playing this new music live. Ben is already on board. Want to join us? Get involved.
tl:dr? I love you, let’s make art together.
